Eurostar to London

Day 12 –  October 12 – Eurostar from Amsterdam to London, Hotel and Pub

Weather – Cool start – seemed sunny in the Netherlands, Belgium, France – however, grey and cloudy in the UK…

NB: Photo to come when wifi is better.

I will actually keep this one short – mostly because I have three day’s worth of blogging to do as we’ve been really packing in the activities, and I  think it’s all catching up on us! Oh woe is me – I’ve been travelling and having too much fun – shall I call the “waambulance” I hear you say. Ok, I’ll hold it together.  Day 12 was taken up with the train trip from Amsterdam to London. I’m a big fan of rail travel anyway, but the efficient rail system here in Europe and the UK is really something to behold. The fact that you can grab a train from the centre of the city and then end up in the centre of the city you want to go to makes it a pretty attractive option. No long lines to get through security, no massive hold ups, no expensive taxi miles out of the city to get to the airport, and then the same on the way to your hotel. You can take liquids on the train, get up and move about easily… It really works for me. The Eurostar zips you at 300kph from Amsterdam to London in about 5hrs I think. And you get to enjoy the scenery on the way there too. I don't care what others say - I’m a fan.

We arrived into St Pancras a little after 5 and got to our hotel and checked in by before 6pm. Quick shower and off to the local pub for some authentic British food and a Pint of something refreshing. Katie was about to order Mac and Cheese, before I shamed her into getting something British – as she had claimed she wanted to get something authentic! Bangers and mash and fish and chips with mushy peas – pretty authentic I should say. And not very good – so very authentic! Nah, it was alright. Lucy ordered the Schnitzel and they had slathered it in garlic butter - deconstructed chicken Kyiv - Amazing! By the end of dinner, Lucy was crashing and burning, so Katie headed up stairs to get her to bed and I saddled up to the bar downstairs and made some new friends. I said I be up after one, but I somehow got distracted, and it took me a little longer to find the lift – ah well – you only live once!

  2. Sounds like quite a day! Talk about terrible public transportation, we are even way worse than Australia, which I think isn’t too bad. We’re both such big places though….

    1. Melbourne is ok - but places such as New York, Tokyo, London, Paris - all much better. Possibly due to the population density requiring a better system. Trams are slow and annoying - ok for short trips - but Melbourne is Geographically massive in comparison to the other cities for the population. I mean Tokyo is only a little bigger in size, but is 40mil vs 5mil. It's easy to drive in Melbourne so there's less incentive for public transport. Hopefully that's changing

  3. If you have time, the boat trip down to Greenwich is great. Some excellent pubs there and a feed of cod and chips on the street with malt vinegar of course!

    1. We had a boat trip planned - but changed to a hop-on-hop off bus. Too much to do, not enough time. Will have to come back.
