The Burger Blog is back - sort of...

Burger: Bacon and Cheese Burger

Rating: 7.5/10

Jungle burger is a small establishment down a laneway, apparently opposite the site of some miracle that took place in the 14th century – they had a mural… Anyway, very small location that seemed to be doing a fair amount of online trade judging by the amount of food delivery people coming and going. There is a small area out the front that you can sit, although this was not quite covered so most of the chairs were wet. We managed to snag a seat inside, very cramped with about seating for 10 across the wall. All seats were taken once we sat down. The menu includes burgers and toasties – they looked quite appetising, but I was here for a burger, so a burger is what I ordered. Lucy got the crispy chicken pieces and some fries and I got the Bacon cheese burger. It arrived within about 20mins, which considering the volume coming out of the micro kitchen they use, was quite impressive. On the kitchen, I spent a bit of time watching them at it and it’s an interesting set up. They were using what looked like commercial George Forman grills – like a sandwich press – to cook the burgers. They could cook about 6-8 per “press” – which was going pretty much non-stop. Our orders arrived in little baskets, American Diner style, with a mound of fries, with mayonnaise of course, and a little smiley toothpick thing to hold the burger together.

First impressions, the burger looked well-constructed, lettuce, tomato, red onion and pickles all visible and looking fresh, cheese well melted and plentiful. My one concern was that the meat looked a little over cooked. On picking up, the bun was soft and fresh. First bite, bun was well toasted, a light brioche style, burger was well sauced, pickles cut through the sauce adding some acidity to balance the cheese and meat. Unfortunately I was right about the meat being over cooked. I also think it had either been over worked, frozen, or it included some binding agents like egg – as it had a bit if a sausage consistency. Disappointing, as the flavour was very good – well seasoned and complemented well by the cheese and sauce. I wonder if the pressing method is also to blame here? The bacon was good, but there wasn’t a lot and it got lost in the cheese and sauce – which relegated it to a bit of background note, and it didn’t seem to be crispy enough to add any textural elements. I’ve been out of the burger blog game for a while, so my rating system is a bit off, but my gut feel on this one is around a 7. I think the overall flavour and experience pushes it to a 7.5, but that patty really let it down for me. Oh – and the chicken nugget things were great, only they had a slight curry flavour, so Lucy didn’t really eat any… Watch this space as there will be more burgers to come I think.

    1. Had mussels in Paris, with a parsley and garlic butter gratin. The mussels were tiny, and considering I can go down to bird rock in Mt Martha and harvest a bag of fresh full sized mussels - I'm not sure if they'd live up to my standards. I will report back.

  2. I bet the smiley face was the only one saw in Amsterdam, except when the locals were taking money off you. Apologies to any Dutch people reading this blog.

    1. Oh look - there did seem to be a fair few grumpy people about. But for the most part they seemed much like Melbourne people. When the weather is ok there seems to be a few more smiles. However, they do seem to be rather blunt. Hope you are enjoying the food pics!

  3. Rather blunt? Surely not the Dutch. Their beer is good though!
